Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT):
Also known as the strip method, FUT involves removing a strip of skin with hair follicles from the donor area, usually the back or sides of the scalp.
The strip is then dissected under a microscope into individual follicular units containing 1-4 hairs.
Tiny incisions are made in the recipient area, and follicular units are implanted into these incisions.
FUT leaves a linear scar at the donor site, which can be hidden by surrounding hair.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): FUE involves extracting individual hair follicles directly from the donor area using a small punch tool (usually 0.8mm to 1.0mm in diameter). The follicles are then implanted into the recipient area one by one. FUE doesn't leave a linear scar like FUT, instead, it leaves tiny dot scars that are less noticeable and heal quickly. Variations of FUE include robotic FUE, where a robotic system assists in the extraction, and manual FUE performed by a surgeon.
Direct Hair Implantation (DHI): DHI is a variation of FUE where the extraction and implantation of follicles are done simultaneously using a specialized tool called a Choi implanter pen. This technique eliminates the need for creating recipient site incisions beforehand, as implantation is done directly. DHI may allow for more precise control over the depth, angle, and direction of implanted hairs.
Each technique has its advantages and considerations, and the choice depends on factors such as the patient's hair loss pattern, donor hair availability, surgeon's expertise, and patient preference.
